Welcome to Pula's magnificent Amphitheatre, the city's most famous and imposing sight!

This 1st-century oval structure, overlooking the harbor northeast of the old town, is slotted together entirely from local limestone and known locally as the Arena.

It doesn’t require much imagination to conjure up the gladiatorial battles that would have taken place here 2,000 years ago. You can even stand in the tunnels and corridors where warriors and lions were kept before entertaining crowds of up to 25,000.

Today, Pula's Amphitheatre still serves the mass entertainment needs of the local populace in the form of concerts and film festival screenings.

👉 Did you know? Beneath the amphitheatre lies a network of intricate underground passageways. These passages were used to transport animals, gladiators, and props to the arena floor during ancient spectacles.
